La Spirale
Text by Italo Calvino and images by Hervé Bernard
This setting of Italo Calvino’s La Spirale (the story of nature’s invention of vision) is inspired by Surrealism, with a particular affection for Dali and Max Ernst, but also by Oulipo, as illustrating a text is a form of constrained creation... and by my previous work Regard sur l’image.
« This short story by Italo Calvino presents the history of living beings over fifty million years, in other words, our history. The narrator, a living being, appears at certain points in the text as a demiurge who has invented and created everything, endowed with both absolute memory and total perception, like a god who is one and multiple at the same time. Rather, he is the singular embodiment of a consciousness in the process of forming itself, recalling from the present the global history of its formation. This consciousness is both individual and common to all. It exists from a »place" encompassing all possible places, i.e., a body.
As is often the case with Calvino, this character with the enigmatic name Qfwfq could be said to be born of text, words and even letters, and to live as a text within a text. But above all, he is a kind of metaphor for the history of life and thought." [https://www.regard-sur-limage.com/Notes-sur-La-Spirale-d-Italo-Calvino.html]
